Having just moved house I spoke to BT to see if they would move my main socket, the one from the line outside, to a better location. They just said any socket install is now £165.00. Thanks BT but no.

An extension lead kit and some wire nail clips from B & Q may well prove to be a tad cheaper

Have done all that my old mate but there are sockets, wires and boxes around the house which need to be checked before I start ripping them out. BT insist that to do this there is another fee of over £90 per hour while the engineer is at the house. So minimum cost is the £165 call out plus a minimum of one hour regardless, so cost is over £250. I think not.

If you're not happy to check it out yourself, talk to your local electrician. When I lasted moved house I had to have the whole house re-wired, so I got the electrician to fit all the phone line wiring and extensions at the same time. BT moaned about connecting to someone else's wiring, but as they were unable to find anything wrong with it, they had no option! So I got a much cheaper job and all the wiring is hidden!

Friend of a friend (ex BT) has sorted my cables and fitted a phone/ethernet box just where I wanted it. All done for much much less than quote from BT.
